10 End of the Year Activities for Secondary ELA

End of the Year Activities for Secondary ELA

With the end of the school year approaching, it is time to start thinking about what types of end-of-the-year activities you want to do in your secondary ELA classroom. Whether you teach middle school ELA or high school English, these end-of-the-year activities are the perfect way to mix in fun and academically-related content to end the school year on the right note.

10 End of the Year Activities for Secondary ELA

1. End of the Year Activities Packet

My End-of-the-Year activities packet is filled with a variety of year-end classroom activities and is perfect for secondary ELA students because it combines fun year-end fun and tasks with some writing. Plus, the activities are geared toward older students, so your older kids will enjoy themselves the last few days of school. Some of my favorite pages in this packet include the letter to the future class, the self-review, and the coloring page, which is perfect for when students finish a big project early.

2. Write a Letter to Your Future Self

One of my absolute favorite activities I’ve ever done is to have my students write a letter to their future selves and bring in a self-addressed, stamped envelope. For the students who were unable to do so, the school helped me out. Several years ago, I had my then seniors write a letter to their future selves expressing their hopes and dreams for their first year out of high school. I mailed my students their letters at the end of the following school year. You can read more about this activity in this blog post.

3. Growth Mindset End of the Year Activities

Another great way to end the school year is to focus on a growth mindset, everything the students have learned this year, and what they aspire to learn in the future. This growth mindset activities packet is great for secondary ELA students, and it includes a variety of year-end reflection and goal-setting activities.

4. One-Pager

If the thought of grading a large stack of essays at the end of the school year makes you cringe, consider one-pagers as a final novel assessment. I like to assign my students a final one-pager project after we read our last class novel of the school year. The one-pager includes layers of literary analysis and comprehension. You can read more about my one-pager final assignment in this blog post.

5. Class Memory Slide

One fun way to celebrate all of your students is to create an end-of-the-year review slide that includes each student! Each slide has a place for the student’s picture, name, and a brief blurb the student writes about their favorite memories from the class and the year. This class presentation is a great backdrop to play during a class celebration. You can click on this link to download a free template!

6. Class Survey

Another great way to wrap up the end of the school year is to offer your students an end-of-the-year class survey. When surveying my students, I like to ask them what they liked best and least about the class in terms of what assignments we did and what we read. I also ask them how I can improve the course and what else I could have done to help them out more. I have a premade digital class survey, and a paper version is also included in my Back-to-School Activities packet.

7. Top 10 List

Another fun activity to have students complete at the end of the school year is a top 10 list. The list can be their top 10 things they read in class, their top 10 memories from your classroom, their top 10 moments from the school year, etc. The possibilities are endless.

8. Fishbowl Discussion

Another great activity for the end of the school year is a fishbowl discussion. I like to use fishbowl discussions as a final exam option rather than a comprehensive exam. You can read more about fishbowl discussions in this blog post.

9. Class Review Poster

Similar to my collaborative short story poster project, it is fun to assign collaborative review posters in the classroom. To do this, assign each group different topics from your unit throughout the past semester. Each group is responsible for including key terms, examples, and analysis on their poster. Groups can share their posters before a final exam at the end of the year.

10. End of the Year Flipbook

This end-of-the-school-year mini flipbook is a great way to spend time reflecting on the year. Each page in this mini flipbook focuses on a different part of the school year to help students set goals, reflect on what they learned, and wrap up the school year.
