How to Organize a Classroom Library: Labeling by Genre

If you are looking for a new way to organize your classroom library, I’ve got just the system for you: organizing by genre. In this post, I will share my favorite way for how to organize a classroom library.

Over the summer, I set out to make improvements to my classroom library. I wanted to find appealing books from diverse authors that my students would want to read. And while I was able to purchase quite a few books at a low price (check garage sales, thrift stores, and used bookstores), I still needed a way to organize my new library.

I decided to organize my library by genre because I felt that by doing so, my students would be able to easily and quickly find books that appealed to their interests. Organizing Your Classroom Library: Labeling Genres to Help Students Find Books

After deciding to organize my high school English classroom library by genre, I searched for labels that I could use to label because they square design would cover most book spines and because they have many different colors. I chose THESE LABELS to use for my classroom library.

Once my labels came in, I downloaded the Word template that was included with the purchase and typed out my labels.

I also decided to add a star next to titles that also had a movie adaptation. Also, since I have more genres than colors, I chose to print similar genres on the same color. For example, my nonfiction, memoir, and biography books all share the same label color.

I followed the directions on the package and printed my labels. To make sure that the labels stuck, I applied THIS BOOK TAPE over the label.

Since the labels are genre and color-coded, it was super easy to organize my library. Furthermore, it is rather easy for my students to put the books back in their proper places because all they have to do is match up the colors.

  • I love this! I also put a white sticker on it to indicate if it’s part of a series. I write the number it is in the series in the white space
